Facilities Technician Needed to Support a Nonprofit News Site

Schedule: Full Time
An independent, reader-supported nonprofit news site dedicated to empowering an informed public and aiming to be the most essential and relevant media organization in the region is seeking a Facilities Technician who will facilitate and maintain operations in an efficient, cost-effective, and safe manner. This role supports the mission to reach more people, build a great organization, and inspire a smarter world by ensuring facilities are maintained to the highest standards.
What Your Day Looks Like:
- Operate, maintain, and repair HVAC, plumbing, electrical, lighting, and fire/life safety equipment.
- Manage AMAG card access and security system data (add, modify, delete).
- Reconfigure and move department furnishings and modular office systems.
- Perform patching, painting, and cosmetic repairs on the building’s interior and exterior.
- Order, pick up, and deliver supplies, parts, and materials as needed.
- Provide setup and takedown for productions and special events.
- Maintain and secure the building and perimeter, reporting safety issues to the VP of Engineering and Technology.
- Inspect fire suppression systems and fire extinguishers weekly.
- Maintain and restock station medical/first aid kits and supplies.
- Actively participate in the Safety Committee and address staff safety needs.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA and WISHA regulations and stay current with updates.
- Serve as a liaison between departments and vendors to ensure effective operations.
- Move and update network/phone lines in collaboration with IT.
- Work with the front desk to manage ID badge and key card processes.
- Assist with shipping and receiving operations as needed.
- Research and engage new vendors and supplies as necessary.
- Ensure proper operation of office and mail machines by coordinating with outside vendors.
- Deliver goods and materials to and from the warehouse as required.
- Perform basic maintenance and repair of station vehicles (e.g., checking oil, replacing wipers, inflating tires).
- Collaborate with team members to foster a positive and productive culture and support growth.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
What You Bring
- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid driver’s license or reliable transportation to meet job requirements.
- Minimum of two years of experience in building maintenance and repair, including plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, and fire systems.
- Knowledge of safety regulations and building automation systems preferred.
- Experience with communications equipment is a plus.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds unassisted.
- Capacity to climb, twist, bend, kneel, crawl, and reach overhead.
- Proficiency in using hand tools, power tools, and various machinery safely.
- Ability to work in confined, noisy, and diverse environments.
- Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call shifts, responding to emergencies as needed.
