Payroll Specialist needed for a benefits brokerage in Tacoma.

Pay Rate: $31.25 per hour
Location: Remote, must be in Tacoma, WA for occasional in-person events
Employment Type: Contract-to-Hire
Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8 AM – 5 PM
As Payroll Specialist, you'll oversee payroll-related communications and contribute to the end-to-end payroll preparation process for both US and Canadian employees. You'll act as the primary resource for staff inquiries regarding pay discrepancies, deduction issues, and direct deposit concerns. Your role will include compiling essential payroll information and performing accurate payroll computations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Oversee end-to-end payroll operations, ensuring timely and precise compensation for employees
- Execute semi-monthly payroll cycles for US and Canadian team members
- Keep payroll data up-to-date and accurate, maintaining adherence to applicable federal, state/provincial, and local laws
- Respond to employee questions and concerns related to compensation and payroll matters.
- Partner with HR to reflect personnel changes in payroll records
- Review and balance payroll accounts
- Monitor legislative updates to ensure ongoing compliance with evolving payroll requirements
- Assist with year-end payroll activities, including W-2 verification and reporting tasks
- Validate and reconcile payroll-related tax filings

Qualifications

Minimum 3 years of experience in payroll administration or related role

Strong practical knowledge of US payroll laws, regulations and tax compliance

Proficiency with payroll software and systems

Tax experience including state and local registrations, tax amendments, and W-2 experience

Proficiency using MS Office, specifically Excel

Professional demeanor and good interpersonal and customer service skills

Proactive working style and ability to think ahead of tasks

Reliable and flexible

Excellent attention to detail and work quality

Strong oral and written communication skills
