Job Summary:
The speech language pathologist evaluates patients and develops the speech/language plan of care in the areas of speech, language, voice, cognition and swallowing in collaboration with the physician. Services are provided across the full continuum and rendered in a cost conscious, quality focused and customer oriented manner. Compliance with all applicable regulatory standards is also required in this role.
Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
- Collaborates with physicians to establish and evaluate treatment programs, goals, and discharge plans related to speech, language, cognition, voice, and swallowing.
- Develops individualized plans of care with patient and/or family input.
- Establishes realistic discharge plans incorporating patient and family goals.
- Implements the speech-language therapy treatment plan.
- Selects appropriate treatment activities to support patient progress.
- Revises goals and plans of care with patient/family input.
- Provides ongoing education and training to patients and families.
- Delivers discharge instructions, follow-up, and community referrals as appropriate.
- Serves as a resource for staff, families, and physicians regarding rehabilitation services and equipment.
- Completes evaluations, plans of care, and treatment documentation per departmental guidelines.
- Records each treatment session according to established protocols.
- Submits discharge summaries, family education materials, and required reports within facility timelines.
- Adheres to ethical standards, integrity, and honesty in all professional activities.
- Maintains confidentiality of patient information.
- Demonstrates respect for diversity and teamwork.
- Maintains punctuality, attendance, and professional appearance (including ID badge compliance).
- Communicates effectively in verbal and written formats.
- Participates in meetings, in-services, and performance improvement activities.
- Organizes workload to complete tasks efficiently and on time.
- Uses materials and equipment safely and cost-effectively.
- Follows infection prevention protocols.
- Demonstrates commitment to excellence through innovation, technology, and patient service.
- Applies AIDET principles consistently in all patient interactions.
- Promotes a positive, respectful, and collaborative environment for patients and staff.
- Utilizes service recovery techniques appropriately.
- Participates in professional development and mandatory education.
- Completes core and annual competencies per departmental timelines.
- Maintains licensure through required continuing education.
- Assists with orientation and training of new employees.
- Meets all hospital and system-mandated requirements.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Complies with all organizational policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.
Required Minimum Education:
- Graduate from an accredited speech-language pathology program.
- Master's Degree in Speech-Language Pathology or other related degree.
Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s):
All certifications are required upon hire unless otherwise stated.
- SLP – Speech Language Pathologist
- BLS – Basic Life Support or BLS-I – Basic Life Support – Instructor
Required Minimum Skills:
- Effective communication skills, customer service focused, team oriented, and basic computer skills.
