Our client is the nation’s largest operating foundation dedicated entirely to foster care. Since its founding in 1966, it has worked to improve the foster care system and ultimately prevent the need for foster care in the United States. Guided by its long-term strategy to safely reduce the number of children in foster care while improving outcomes for those who remain, the foundation combines decades of front-line experience with research and policy advocacy. It partners with states, counties, and policymakers at all levels to identify and implement improvements in child welfare practices.

As the Internal Communications Specialist, you will support organization-wide communications by developing clear, timely, and engaging content for internal audiences. This role is responsible for drafting and editing employee communications, compiling daily news briefings, monitoring shared inboxes for media and general inquiries, and assisting with occasional social media content. Working closely with leadership and cross-functional teams, the Specialist ensures messaging is accurate, well-coordinated, and aligned with organizational priorities. This position is writing-focused, with an emphasis on internal communications and journalism-style content development rather than technical writing or external marketing communications.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop, write, and edit clear, engaging internal communications including announcements, staff updates, leadership messages, and organizational newsletters.

  • Compile and distribute a daily news brief by monitoring relevant external news sources, summarizing key highlights, and organizing curated content for internal distribution platforms.

  • Monitor and manage shared communication inboxes, triaging media inquiries and internal requests, and routing messages to appropriate teams or stakeholders in a timely manner.

  • Support internal messaging initiatives by drafting organization-wide emails in collaboration with departments such as HR and leadership, including communications related to employee recognition, cultural observances, and major organizational updates.

  • Monitor organizational social media accounts and assist with drafting and publishing occasional posts aligned with internal and external messaging strategies.

  • Review and edit internal communications drafted by cross-functional teams to ensure clarity, consistency, tone alignment, and adherence to brand and style guidelines.

  • Maintain content on internal communication platforms (e.g., intranet or SharePoint), ensuring information is current, accessible, and well-organized.

  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills with the ability to translate complex information into clear, concise, and engaging content for internal audiences.

  • Experience supporting employee communications, leadership messaging, or organization-wide announcements.

  • Background in journalism, newsroom, or multimedia storytelling preferred.

  • Familiarity with monitoring and managing shared inboxes and responding to time-sensitive inquiries.

  • Working knowledge of social media platforms such as Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram, including drafting and publishing occasional posts.

  • Experience maintaining content within intranet or content management systems (e.g., SharePoint).

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 applications, including Outlook, Word, Teams, and SharePoint.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet daily deadlines, and work collaboratively across departments.

  • Strong attention to detail and sound judgment when handling sensitive or high-visibility communications.

  • Understanding of internal communications best practices; not a technical writing or external marketing communications role.
