As the Hospital Collections Specialist, you will manage healthcare accounts receivable activities with a focus on resolving complex institutional claims, payer denials, and outstanding insurance balances. You will work closely with commercial and government payers to pursue reimbursements, submit reconsiderations and appeals, review EOBs, and resolve payment discrepancies while ensuring accurate documentation within EMR systems. The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented and self-sufficient A/R professional who thrives in a high-volume remote environment, demonstrates strong critical thinking skills, and is interested in long-term growth within a collaborative healthcare revenue cycle team. 

  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities  

  • Manage assigned accounts receivable (A/R) portfolios and perform follow-up activities to resolve outstanding healthcare claims and balances. 

  • Contact commercial and government insurance payers to verify claim status, request payment updates, and resolve reimbursement issues. 

  • Submit claims for reconsideration, corrected claims, and appeals in accordance with payer guidelines and deadlines. 

  • Review and interpret Explanation of Benefits (EOBs) and remittance advice to identify denials, underpayments, and payment discrepancies. 

  • Research and resolve debit and credit balances following insurance payments to ensure account accuracy. 

  • Identify root causes of unpaid or delayed claims and take appropriate corrective action to prevent recurring issues. 

  • Handle coordination of benefits (COB) processes, including verification of primary and secondary insurance coverage. 

  • Escalate complex or unresolved accounts to leadership, payer representatives, or appropriate internal departments as needed. 

  • Document account activity, claim updates, and collection efforts accurately within EMR and billing systems. 

  • Prepare and submit detailed appeals related to medical necessity, authorization denials, timely filing issues, and other payer disputes. 

  • Maintain compliance with HIPAA regulations, payer requirements, and organizational billing policies. 

  • Collaborate with billing, coding, and clinical teams to support timely claim resolution and maximize reimbursement outcomes. 

  • Other duties as assigned  

  

Qualifications  

  • Minimum of 2 years of healthcare A/R collections experience required, including hospital/institutional claims. 

  • Must have a reliable remote work setup, including high-speed internet, personal equipment, and a monitor; internet speed test required. 

  • Experience managing complex commercial and government payer accounts, denials, reconsiderations, and appeals. 

  • Strong understanding of EOBs, insurance balance resolution, and coordination of benefits (COB). 

  • Ability to write effective appeals related to medical necessity, authorization, and timely filing denials. 

  • Experience working in EMR systems required; Epic preferred. Additional experience with Meditech, Paragon, eCW, or Cerner accepted. 

  • Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and escalation skills with the ability to work independently in a high-volume environment. 

  • Detail-oriented, self-sufficient, and interested in long-term growth within a healthcare A/R team. 

  • Comfortable working within a virtual desktop environment with screen-sharing and productivity monitoring software in use.
